The Swimsetter's Guide: Under-the-Radar Richmond, California
Posted on

There’s no debating that California is one of the most diverse and beautiful states in the country. And some would say, “you get what you pay for” but what if I told you in the Northern California, one of the bay area’s finest up-and-coming neighborhoods is also one of the most affordable? Welcome to Richmond California. We spent a day cruising around the rolling hills and coastal views with Richmond based realtor Colin Davies, to check out some of the best local gems and natural splendor that makes Richmond California the next upcoming neighborhood to put on your radar.

Here’s are a few of my favorites:

Bomb-ass tacos on demand:

La Flor de Jalisco
Usually located on the edge of North and East Richmond, at the intersection Clinton and the main strip of 23rd street you will find this authentic taco truck offering killer asada, chicharron, pastor, and carnitas street tacos, along with Mexican Coca Cola to quench your thirst. Right across the street you can slip into Portumex for an ice-cold beer and a variety of culinary culmination of Portuguese and Mexican fare.
Drink- Horchata: rice milk with cinnamon
Eat- Chicharron tacos (melt-in-your-mouth good)

Friendly and fresh grocery store chain:

Rincon Latino on San Pablo
Best neighborhood grocery store for exotic produce, spices and fresh meat market featuring all cuts of meat- one of only a handful of markets carrying oxtails and Brazilian fine items. Serving the neighborhood of North and East Richmond. Super friendly and helpful staff.

Coastal winery and event space:

R&B winery- Port Richmond
There are not many things more relaxing then sipping on cider beer and vino watching the sailboats drift by. This bayside winery is located in an industrial warehouse next to the shipping docks. Stacked oak barrels, string lights hanging from the high-exposed rod iron beam ceiling, makes it a modern, urban-chic space to host events or simply get together in the tasting room with your friends. Expect live music events, award winning wines and great seaside atmosphere at the coastal gem in Port Richmond.
Drink- Far West guava-infused cider beer. A-maz-ing Flavor!

Health-conscious Coffee shop:

Kaleidoscope Coffee
Whimsical coffee shop in downtown point Richmond with gluten-free brownie ice cream sandwiches and coconut sorbet gelato.
Drink- Vietnamese coffee or an iced matcha latte
Eat- All spice or ginger gelato on a cone. Sweeet and spicy all at once!

Day hiking with a side of surfing:

Marin Headlands Coastal Trail
After a scenic drive through the Marin Headlands, you will arrive at the expansive dog-friendly Rodeo beach with ample surfbreaks at the base of rolling emerald hills akin to those found in Ireland. Explore the steep winding paths of the coastal trail, picturesque views and cold war era military bunkers tucked into the cliff sides. Although sometimes hazy in the morning, this hike offers gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco on a clear day. Large free parking lot and clean public restrooms makes this a great family friendly place to spend the entire day.

Best hike for a gorgeous sunset picnic:

Wildcat Canyon

Wildcat canyon regional trail offers gorgeous sunset views of the east bay. A short, but steep climb up a zigzagging trail through the woods leads to rolling grassy hills overlooking panoramic views the east San Francisco bay. Transported to a European hilltop, you will be singing “the hills are alive with the sound of music” Serene and romantic way to end a perfect day exploring Richmond.

Where to take your friends from out of town:

Cavallo Point
Take a Sunday drive through the rolling hills of Sausalito, and pull off on the side of the road for iconic views of the Bay Bridge and San Fransico skyline. Afterwards, drink rose and dine on oysters at the charming nearby Farley Bar at the Cavallo Point Lodge.
